Excitement building: It’s still winter but people have been messaging me for more than two months to ask for information about party schedules and special events taking place on Mykonos this summer.  I wish I could tell you specific dates that top DJs will be appearing on the island, but the simple truth is that it’s just too early — the island’s biggest and most popular clubs typically don’t announce their full summer party rosters and DJ lineups until late May or mid-June.

So far, only one venue — Scarpa Bar at the Little Venice seafront — has offered a hint of what’s in store for this  summer.  Scarpa this week announced that Dino MFU will be notching his 10th anniversary of summer residency at the club, so a series of special parties will be held over the course of the summer to mark the occasion.  Scarpa also announced that Ms. Lefki and Ionas Feenstra will be Scarpa’s other resident DJs, while the club has been upgraded with new sound and light systems. Dino will be on the decks for the bar’s official opening parties on Friday April 7 and Saturday April 8.

Another popular party spot in Mykonos Town, Room 101, also will be opening on Friday April 7, while  Nammos, the iconic restaurant and beach bar venue at Psarou beach,  will open on April 8.  Buddha-Bar Beach, at the Santa Marina resort at Ornos, starts its season on Monday May 15.

Speaking of Nammos, it will be hosting DJ Vassili TsiliChristos and his hugely popular Made in Mykonos party again this summer. Mark your calendar for Saturday July 29 if you’re planning to attend.

I can also give you the dates for the XLSIOR Festival, the biggest annual party and music event on Mykonos. One of the world’s premier gay festivals, it will feature daytime and night parties at various beaches, bars and clubs around the island from August 23 to 30, and is expecting as many as 30,000 participants from around the globe. Full party schedules and DJ lineups for XLSIOR won’t be released until early August, though, so there’s nothing more I can tell you at this time about specific party themes or which DJs will be on the decks for each event.

XLSIOR Festival is the biggest annual party on Mykonos, and is expected to draw up to 30,000 participants from August 23 to 30

When are the best parties? For those of you who haven’t been to Mykonos before but are planning to visit this year, keep in mind that peak travel season — as well as peak party season — is during July and August, with August being the wildest and most crowded month on the island. If you like things crazy-busy, and want to catch appearances by the world’s top DJs, August is absolutely the best time to go. If you can’t make it that month, July is almost as good — there’s nearly as many events taking place, and plenty of leading international DJs will be headlining at the clubs then as well.

Since Mykonos is primarily a summer destination, the party scene can seem low-key or sometimes even subdued during months other than July and August. That’s because the big holiday crowds haven’t yet hit the island, so the partying doesn’t get as fierce and frenzied in May, June or September as it does during of peak season.

The most popular place to chill, dine, drink and party on Mykonos last year was Scorpios, and its Sneaky Sundays event featuring Sneaky Sound System was the hottest weekly party on the island

Paradise Club is perennially one of the most popular party spots on the island. It’s at Paradise beach — for years the top party beach on Mykonos.

The 7 restaurants you simply must try on Mykonos

Spilia restaurant and seaside bar Mykono

Lobster pasta and freshly-caught sea urchins are two of the signature dishes that writer Heather Warburton recommends ordering at Spilia. It was one of her seven favourite restaurants on a recent trip to Mykonos.

Guest post by Heather Warburton

There are many reasons to go to Mykonos—the color of the water alone, the music, and the stunning villas—but, undoubtedly, the food scene will convince you. If you intend to eat light and vegetarian, you’ll find no better place, and then again, if you’re more into feta cheese and baklava, you’ll be just fine, too.

I spent five days in Mykonos in early July, and these were my favorite restaurants:

♦ Scorpios

Scorpios Mykonos

Scorpios is one of the only places to succeed in being both a terrific restaurant, and a really fun party. On a charming stretch of Paraga Beach, Scorpios is a sprawling compound. There’s an indoor area that’s light and spacious, with comfortable couches and a well-designed bar. If you come early in the day (read: before noon), you might see people working on their laptops sipping a green juice. Outside there is one large bar, a deck, a beach with over 40 lounge “beds,” and finally, a restaurant.

Despite its massive size, Scorpios boasts impeccable, friendly service and an intimate vibe. Graze on tzatziki, hummus, and spicy pita chips while waiting for a table. They’ll be the best pita chips of your life. You’ll find a vegetable driven menu once seated, with Mykonian salads (tomatoes, capers, cucumbers and feta cheese), whole roasted fish with your choice of sauce, and so many others. (I loved the quinoa with raisins and the zucchini with fresh mint). Their cocktail list is particularly impressive and long, with innovative and not-overly-sweet takes on your spirit of choice.

Go for a late lunch or sunset dinner.

Daily party events

The island’s main party beaches are Paradise, Super Paradise and Paraga, where beach parties start in the afternoon and continue into the evening. At Paradise, parties start around 4 p.m. at Tropicana Club and at Guapaloca, while partying can begin as early as mid afternoon at Super Paradise Club at Super Paradise beach. Guapaloca also throws a body painting partyk every night at 10 p.m. At Paraga, you’ll find afternoon beach parties at Kalua, daily pool parties at 5 p.m. at Sueno Village, and music entertainment events most days of the week at Scorpios. Parties can spontaneously erupt at Psarou beach, as well, when guests at Nammos beach bar and restaurant feel the urge to let loose (and they often do).

In Mykonos Town,  Semeli Hotel holds a Sun:Set party at 6 p.m. every day in its Semeli Lounge. The Elysium Hotel in the School of Fine Arts district presents its famous Sunset Cabaret on its seaview pool terrace every evening starting at 8:30 p.m., while @54 Club has nightly drag shows starring Roxy Brooks and dancer Matthew Malia at 1 a.m. At the 4711 live music club, Dionisis Sxoinas will perform nightly (except on Tuesdays and Wednesdays) from July 21 through to August 21.

Regular weekly events

Besides special one-time events featuring leading Greek and international DJs, some bars and beach clubs hold regular theme parties on specific days of the week. Here are some of the regular events being offered during July and August this summer:

Tuesday: Scorpios hosts the Yoruba Soul Experience music event, starting at 5 p.m. Madon presents its weekly Propaganda party starting at midnight. Vinos bar features live jazz music from 10 p.m., and Dome Club has its Showtime Tuesdays party.

Thursday: Hippie Fish at Agios Ioannis beach throws its Peace Love Music parties starting at 1 p.m.; and Scorpios presents its weekly Movements music event at 5 p.m.  And starting at 10 p.m., Vinos bar presents live jazz music.

Friday: Scorpios holds its weekly Ceremonia music event beginning at 5 p.m.; Kalua holds its weekly Obsessions party with DJ Agent Greg starting at 5 p.m.; Blu Blu Lounge presents its Blu Sunset party with “eclectic” music by DJ Dest starting at 7.30 p.m.; and The Dublin pub at Agios Stefanos presents live Greek rock music with local band the VBros starting at 10:30 p.m.

Saturday: Monarch at Platis Gialos beach holds its weekly Blackrock Sinful Sunset beach party starting at 5 p.m.

Sunday: Liasti beach resort offers live saxophone music and jazz vocals in its restaurant area. The weekly day-to-night Sneaky Sundays music event takes place at Scorpios beginning at 5 p.m.; Toy Room Club hosts its weekly Incognito Masked Ball; and DJ Giannis Zissis from Athens spins at Dome Club.

Party announcements are added to this post whenever they are released, so check back regularly for updates. I usually add new events every day, and sometimes more than once a day. Note that most bars and clubs don’t post their full party schedules for the summer, and sometimes announce special events or DJ appearances as little as one to three days before they take place.

What’s happening:  Now that it is spring, some Mykonos bars and clubs have opened for the 2016 tourist season, while others have begun announcing the dates they will re-open.

Ling Ling got things off to an early start on March 23 when it kicked off its second season on Mykonos. It was followed in early April by Passo Doble Cocktail Bar, the JackieO’ bar in Mykonos Town, and Room 101. Mid-April saw the opening of popular gay hangouts Lola and Porta Bar, along with Galleraki Bar and Vicolo Bar at Little Venice. Scarpa Bar and Semeli Bar in Little Venice will open in late April, as will Thalami Bar behind the Mykonos Town Hall, and Remezzo near the Old Port. Beach parties resumed in mid-April with Guapaloca Bar and Tropicana Club opening at Paradise Beach. They will be joined the last week of April by Nammos at Psarou beach and Kalua Bar at Paraga. And in May,  Scorpios will celebrate its grand re-opening at Paraga beach.

Speaking of beach clubs, there will be at least two new spots to check out this summer. Rakkan Mykonos will be opening in late May at Kalo Livadi beach, while Monarch has moved to Platis Gialos beach. See my post New beach bar/restaurant venues coming to Mykonos for further details about those two places.

Party schedules will be posted here when available

Bookmark this page and keep checking back — I will be updating this post with information about bar & club openings, and DJ schedules, as soon as events are announced. Keep in mind that the island’s biggest party clubs generally don’t post detailed summer party lineups until late May to mid June, while many bars don’t publicize their season kick-off celebrations until shortly before they open their doors.

For information about ticket prices, advance booking, table reservations and VIP services, please contact the specific clubs you are interested in.

And if you want to get a general idea of what to expect around the time you’re planning to visit Mykonos this summer, scroll through my 2015 party post, which lists club openings and party events that took place each month between March and November last year.
