Restaurant roundup: Last month, I posted an extensive report about restaurants in the TripAdvisor.com Mykonos forum. What follows below is a slightly edited version of the same report, with photos.

This is a description of restaurants that I personally dined at, took a look at, or heard about while visiting Mykonos for 8 days in May. My list isn’t intended to be exhaustive by any means; in fact, there are dozens of additional restaurants on the island that I didn’t get the opportunity to visit, so there are plenty of places popular with other Mykonos regulars that aren’t even mentioned in my remarks. If I’d had a longer holiday (and more money), I would have been able to review more restaurants!

Get outta Town! What follows is an account of restaurants located outside of Mykonos Town that I dined at, saw, or heard people talking about last month.

 

On the peripheral road around the town center

Gola, which was extremely popular the past several years, has closed. Word about town is that the Belvedere Hotel, which owns the property, will be opening an Asian restaurant in its place. Locals didn’t know if the new place will be as expensive as Gola (they’re hoping it will be more affordable) or when it will officially open.

Blue Ginger serves Thai and Chinese cuisine on a hilltop location with wonderful views of Mykonos Town and the sunset. Friends who dined there last year say the food is as good as the amazing views. (One of these friends used to live in Thailand, so if she recommends the food at Blue Ginger, then it has to be first-rate.)

Fantastic food: There are two things we remember most about our first-ever trip to Patmos in 2010: the beautiful scenery at Grikos Bay, and the equally impressive meals we had at three restaurants in the Grikos area. In fact, while we were on Samos after our visit to Patmos, we kept commenting about how much we missed the food at Grikos. And to this day, we still talk about one of the delicious dishes we enjoyed during two different dinners:  the roasted chickpeas at Flisvos restaurant. My attempts to recreate the recipe at home have failed miserably, so I’m hoping that some day soon we can return to Grikos and order them again!

Local specialties: We haven’t been to Santorini in several years, but we still talk about how much we have enjoyed Aktaion taverna in Firostefani.

We discovered this little restaurant gem back in 2004 when we stayed at the Santorini Palace Hotel during our first trip to the island.  Aktaion is situated just a short walk from the Santorini Palace, right beside the scenic clifftop footpath that links the village of Firostefani with the island’s bustling main town of Fira.

Seaside drinks & dining: We found our favourite taverna on Ios thanks to advice from a fellow Canadian traveller, Cathy, who visits the island regularly. Last March, I asked if she could recommend any reasonably-priced seaside restaurants that offered scenic views as well as tasty traditional Greek cuisine. At the top of Cathy’s list was Drakos Taverna at the far end of Mylopotas beach. “It’s a really good authentic restaurant,” she said.

We were at Mylopotas on May 20 when I started feeling peckish for a light midafternoon snack. I recalled that Cathy had suggested Drakos taverna, so that’s where we headed. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

Mmmm-mmm Mykonos: I hope you’ll pardon the pun, but one of my biggest “beefs” about Mykonos is that the island has so many dining spots, you smell food cooking and see people eating practically everywhere you go. That’s especially the case in the confusing maze of streets in Mykonos Town, where a half-hour stroll will take you past dozens of tavernas, cafés and snack bars with chairs and tables in the narrow streets or bougainvillea-shaded terraces and courtyards merely steps away. It literally seems like everywhere you look, restaurant staff are busy serving food and beverages, while tourists and locals alike are sitting down to enjoy their snacks, meals or drinks. Of course, everything always looks tantalizing and smells divine!

… so I settled for a chicken gyros instead. It hit the spot!

 

Wallet friendly: It’s easy to blow a travel budget to smithereens on Mykonos, where dinner for two at some of the island’s chic restaurants can cost as much as a night’s accommodation at a five-star hotel. (See my July 20 2011 Mykonos dining post for further details on some of the current hot dining spots frequented by the world’s rich and famous.)

But it’s just as simple to keep more brass in your pocket by feasting on some cheap eats now and then instead of splurging on costly meals at trendy dining establishments, or even €30 dinners at some of the island’s more reasonably priced restaurants.

Case in point: Jimmi’s souvlaki place in Mykonos Town. This popular fast food shop in the heart of Mykonos Town is an island institution, having been in business for over 30 years. (They’re open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, from May through October.)

Jimmi’s has been busy almost every time we’ve walked past (which I’m sure has been more times than I could count), but until this past May we had never tried their food. The reason? I got my fill of gyros and souvlaki during my university days, and have rarely ordered it since. I think I’ve eaten only one or two gyros in the past 10 years, and I’ve ordered souvlaki maybe just half a dozen times in total during our various trips to Greece.

But when we couldn’t get an outdoor table at our favourite Mykonos restaurant, Maerion (unless we were willing to wait about an hour, which we weren’t), we thought we’d give Jimmi’s a try — and save some cash at the same time.

What I really wanted was one of their roast chicken dinners (can’t recall the price; it may have been about €7), but the counter staff shook their heads, pointed to an empty rotisserie machine and told me: “no more — all gone.” I was set to walk back to Maerion but decided to settle for a chicken gyros instead. We ate outside the restaurant at one of their little tables on a narrow step next to the street, watching a steady stream of customers picking up food to take out or eat in (there’s a few tables along the wall and on a small terrace near one of the two entrances, plus a room with more seating on the other side of the narrow road).

My gyros was a little salty, but otherwise tasted great — and satisfied my appetite. The price was even better. Two gyros (mine, plus my partner’s vegetarian gyros), a Coke and a bottle of water cost less than €6 — about the same price as one appetizer at Maerion, and less than the cost of a Greek salad there.

I have a strong feeling we’ll be going back to Jimmi’s next time we’re on Mykonos.
