Fresh perspective: With this post, I’m proud to add a new feature to my blog — photographs taken in Greece by travellers other than me and my partner. “Through another lens” will take you to places we haven’t yet had the chance to visit in Greece, as well as bring you back to some familiar and favourite locations that I have profiled in previous posts.

I’m launching “Through another lens” with these Mykonos photos by Juan Carlos Serna of Woburn, England, whom I had the pleasure of meeting last month while he and his family were vacationing on the island. Hope you enjoy his photos!

Feel free to contact me if you have Greek holiday pics of your own that you’d be happy to share on MyGreeceTravelBlog.com.

20 beaches: Locals tell me there are more than 60 beaches on Mykonos, some of which are situated in remote areas of the island that few tourists ever get to see. In all my visits to Mykonos to date, I have seen less than 30 beaches, which means there are still plenty more for me to discover on future holidays.

Last month, I got to see more than 20 different beaches, and actually spent awhile enjoying 17 of them.  I visited Kapari and Lia for the first time ever, and made return trips to several beaches I had not seen in a few years: Kalafatis, Elia, Super Paradise,  Psarou and Agios Stefanos.

    Little Venice Mykonos

Wind and waves: The seaside strip of cocktail bars in Little Venice is usually packed with cruise ship passengers and other travellers enjoying a drink or lunch at one of the most popular tourist attractions in Mykonos Town. But on at least two days during my May 2012 holiday in Mykonos, strong winds and high waves made it impossible for visitors to sit anywhere close to the sea — unless they happened to be wearing wetsuits.

  • Top 6 memories of my Mykonos holiday in 2012 — #5: An unusual mix of wacky, weird weather

Sunshine & storms, wind & waves: I arrived on Mykonos in warm, brilliant sunshine on May 14 … and that’s exactly what the weather was like when I left the island eight days later. But during the days in between, there was an incredible variety of weather conditions unlike anything I’ve experienced on Mykonos before.

On my seven previous visits to Mykonos, the weather had been predominantly sunny and warm. Some days were windy, some mornings and evenings were downright chilly, the sky was hazy on a few afternoons, and there were two brief rainshowers between dawn and breakfast time on two separate mornings back in May 2006. Overall, there was excellent weather for sightseeing, hiking and beach activities during each of my holidays. This year, Mother Nature made sure I experienced Mykonos in just about every kind of spring weather condition imaginable.

Stark contrasts: On Mykonos, I have always loved the stark contrast between the arid, rocky island and the blue sea and sky that surround it. The rugged brown landscape seems to make the Aegean Sea’s shimmering turquoise water look more vivid and vibrant, especially at beaches, than it does at other Cycladic islands, where it has a pronounced cobalt hue.

This trip I did a lot of walking on Mykonos, as usual, but also saw many parts of the island through the windows of buses and cars.  I never got bored of the scenery, and always found it exhilarating whenever the vehicle rounded a corner and gave us a glimpse of a horseshoe-shaped bay with alluring blue and green water sparkling under the blazing sun.

Back again: It’s that time of year — Greek holiday time! And I’m back in Greece for another island-hopping holiday.

Right now I’m at my first stop — Mykonos — where it’s mainly sunny and hot and the island is revving up for the summer season.

Wi-Fi connections permitting, I will be posting photos in the days ahead!
