Bonbonniere club on Mykonos shared this image of the island’s iconic Paraportiani Church to wish everyone a Happy 15th of August and urge them to “Dance, love and be lively!” August 15 — also known as Panagia and Dekapentavgoustos — is the day Greek Orthodox Christians celebrate the death of the Virgin Mary, and her rise into heaven. It’s the biggest summer holiday in Greece, so commemorative events will take place at churches throughout Mykonos and celebrations will follow.

The island’s biggest annual music and gay party event, the XLSIOR Mykonos Festival, had been scheduled to take place from August 18 to 25. However, this year’s festival has been cancelled as a result of restrictions imposed by the Greek government to control Covid. Festival organizers announced the cancellation in social media posts published on July 13 (see below).
Today (Tuesday July 13), the Mykonos XLSIOR Festival posted this notice on social media to announce the cancellation of this year’s event — scheduled for late August — and to explain the reasons for its decision. This is the result of new restrictions the Greek government has imposed on bars, nightclubs, cinemas and other entertainment venues to control the sharp increase in the number of Covid cases the country has experienced during the past two weeks. The restrictions require that all patrons in indoor bars, clubs, restaurants and entertainment venues must remain seated (no dancing allowed), and stipulate that only people who are fully vaccinated may be allowed into these indoor spaces. The rule regarding indoor venue entry only for the fully vaccinated takes effect from Friday July 16 and continues until the end of August. Outdoor businesses have the option to decide if they will allow entry only for vaccinated guests.
