— Updated on June 19 2022 —

The Island of the Winds: Much like the dry Meltemi winds that blast the island every summer, the winds of change blow strongly on Mykonos, bringing a flurry of brand-new hotels, restaurants, bars and shops for each fresh travel season.

This cycle of constant change and renewal is an integral part of what makes Mykonos so vibrant, exciting and enthralling — it ensures there are always plenty of new places popping up where visitors can explore and enjoy the latest Greek and international trends in design, decor, fashion, food, drink and entertainment.

Here are snapshots of some of the notable changes and newcomers that Mykonos visitors will discover during the 2022 travel season.

Photos of Saltbae Mykonos burger restaurant by Dimitris Koutsoukos

Regular Mykonos visitors will notice a big change at Goumenio Square in Mykonos Town this summer. The popular meat and meze restaurant Familia is gone — its prized location has been acquired by celebrity chef Nusret Gokce and transformed into one of his high-end Saltbae Burger joints. (Gokce brought his world-famous Nusret steakhouse to Mykonos in 2019, and is still packing that place with big-spending customers every night). The Saltbae burger restaurant and bar opened in mid-June, serving a variety of burgers and steak sandwiches at prices starting at €30 and up, along with Oreo, marshmallow and “crazy baklava” shakes costing €19 and €25 respectively.  The restaurant’s signature dish,  the Gold Burger, is a juicy Wagyu Saltbae burger covered in edible 24K gold and smothered in freshly melted cheddar cheese. It is served with seasoned fries and sells for only €150.

Where to stay: For some people, Mykonos can be an overwhelming place to visit in summer. Though it’s a fairly small island, it can seem as busy, bustling, and bursting with energy as any big city.  Selecting a place to stay on Mykonos can be equally intimidating, since there are so many options — everything from airbnbs, rental rooms, studios and apartments, to villas, holiday houses, hotels, full-service luxury resorts, posh suites, and exclusive vacation retreats.

Repeat Mykonos visitors have their favourite places to stay, or are familiar with alternatives should they wish to try somewhere new. But for people planning a first-ever holiday on Mykonos, the range of choices can leave their heads spinning.

If you’re going to the island this year for the first time, we hope you can use this post as a starting point to assist your search for the holiday accommodations that best suit your tastes and travel budget. We can’t show you all the possible places to stay on Mykonos, since there are thousands, at all price ranges. Instead, we have collected photos of many of the island’s most popular lodgings and the spots we personally like, so you can simply scroll through the top options without having to click your way through multiple online booking sites or look up individual hotel or vacation rental websites. We have provided a link to the website or an official social media page for each place pictured, though, so if you see something that strikes your fancy, you can click for detailed information and photos.

And here’s a tip to keep in mind when you do find a place that interests you: book direct either through their website’s online reservation system, or by calling or emailing the property. Most Mykonos hotels offer discounts or extras if you book direct with them instead of through a third-party reservation site.

On this page, we have posted snapshot profiles of some of the island’s most dreamy and impressive places to stay, including premier 5-star hotels and resorts and other outstanding or unique accommodations. If you’re going to Mykonos to celebrate a wedding, honeymoon, anniversary or other special occasion, one of these properties might be perfect for you, especially if you’ve got an urge to splurge or pamper yourself in special surroundings.

Page 2 spotlights many of the island’s perennially popular hotels and resorts, along with some new arrivals; while

Page 3 shows a variety of rental apartments, rooms, studios, suites and holiday houses.

This post is still a work in progress … we will be adding more properties regularly, so check back for updates.

Where to go in Greece: Paxos island for scenic coasts, quiet coves and secluded luxury

Share

Travel + Leisure December 27 2021 article on Paxos island in Greece

The headline touting a quiet island with no crowds is what initially piqued our curiosity when we noticed the Travel + Leisure magazine article For a Greek vacation without the crowds, head to the quiet island of Paxos, published December 22 2021.

What stoked our interest in Paxos even more were vivid descriptions of the island in writer Rachel Howard’s trip report, illustrated with blissful scenes captured by photographer Loulou d’Aki. The two had travelled to the little “green speck” in the Ionian Sea during last year’s travel season.

Rachel certainly paints a pretty portrait of Paxos as she cites its ample attractions: Verdant landscapes lush with pine forests and olive tree groves; craggy coastlines carved with cliffs, sea caves, secluded coves and quiet beaches; charming villages and scenic harbours; quaint tavernas serving delicious Greek cuisine and seafood. And, best of all, “no ritzy boutiques or champagne bars, no fancy resorts, and scarcely any hotels.”

It sounded like a Greek island paradise we would love — until Rachel noted that the same features so alluring to us also happen to be highly coveted by “the European aristocrats and upper-crust Brits who are stealthily building palatial pads camouflaged by the hills, hovering on the edges of plunging cliffs, or poised on pristine coves with private moorings and speedboats for exploring the turquoise coastline.”

And the two luxury properties she stayed at — the Aperghis Estate villas to begin with, followed by “the most sensational estate on the island,” the ultra-exclusive Paxos PTR rental villa owned by architect Patrizia Peracchio of Milan — aren’t the types of accommodations we would feel comfortable booking for just the two of us.

But if we were travelling with family or friends and needed a holiday hideaway offering style, space and privacy for a large group, either of those luxe lodgings would probably be perfect — and the rental rates of up to $27,000 (U.S.) per week much more affordable.

While a big group holiday isn’t likely in the cards for us in the near term, it was still fun and interesting to read Rachel’s report and daydream of a trip to Paxos sometime.

Could Paxos perhaps be the perfect place for you?

As an aside: The Paxos PTR estate that Rachel wrote about was mentioned in another travel article last year, The Greek islands holidays to book for summer. In that piece, published in April by The Times of London, Susan D’Arcy said “Paxos is villa heaven but even so, Paxos PST is the one that stands out, an architect-designed one-off with Instagrammable green marble pool and lovely gardens.”

For specific details and rental rates, you’ll have to request details from Five Star Greece, which manages the property.  In the meantime, you can see aerial views of the estate’s spectacular clifftop location in the video below:

Drone views of the stunning clifftop perch for the Paxos PST and PTR villa properties are shown in this short clip by Greece Villa Videos. The camera doesn’t begin changing position until around the 30-second mark, so we suggest fast-forwarding to that point to begin watching the film.

Radisson Blu Zaffron Resort on Santorini swimming pool

The Radisson Blu Zaffron Resort is a luxury retreat that opened in August 2021 at Kamari beach on Santorini

Newly opened: We regularly receive emails from readers asking us to recommend accommodations at Santorini beach resort areas — requests we’re not well-positioned to respond to since we haven’t been to the island since 2006, and have only stayed at caldera-side hotels when there.

But when someone recently asked if we knew of any stylish luxury hotels near one of the island’s beaches, we actually could suggest a place for them to consider — we had just received a media release announcing that a brand-new 5-star hotel had opened its doors.

The Radisson Blu Zaffron Resort opened in August at Kamari, a seaside village popular for its lively bar- and cafe-lined beach promenade, and an open-air summer cinema. Designed and built in traditional Cycladic style, the Radisson Blu Zaffron is an exclusive luxury retreat situated a short stroll from the resort area’s bars and restaurants, and just 150 meters from the black volcanic sands of Kamari beach.

Designed for discerning travelers who appreciate refined luxury, the rooms and suites follow a traditional Cycladic outline with arches, smooth lines and cotton-white walls embellished with an exotic boho-chic décor and high-end furnishings,” the website says.

Radisson Zaffron Blu Resort Santorini restaurant and cuisine

Resort guests can savour tastes of Italy in the Radisson Blu Zaffron’s two in-house restaurants, Zefferino Ristorante and Belloni Trattoria.

The menu at the fine dining Zefferino Ristorante spotlights “meticulously selected dishes with raw ingredients brought by local Italian producers, honoring the rich gastronomic heritage of the Emilia-Romagna and Liguria regions as well as the Zeffirino family, who have been awarded the title of ‘Ambassador of Italian Cuisine’ thanks to their Genoese Pesto brand.”

Belloni Trattoria boasts an open kitchen and relaxed, laid-back atmosphere where guests can enjoy a mix of Greek and Italian dishes for lunch, and classic, traditional Italian cuisine for dinner.
