Aegean announces seat sale; British Airways offers new direct flights from LHR to Mykonos & Santorini

Get there cheaper: If you have been thinking about travelling to Greece sometime during the first half of this year, now could be a good time to book your flights — Aegean Airlines has just announced a sale on direct flights to Greece from more than two dozen destinations in Europe and the Middle East.

In an email sent to customers and followers today, Aegean advises that fares are available at savings up to 30 per cent for travel between February 10 and June 30 of this year.  The seat sale applies to direct Athens-bound flights from 22 different cities, as well as to its direct flights to Heraklion, Kalamata, Corfu, Rhodes and Thessaloniki from various locations.

The promotion ends January 20.

 

British Airways launches new routes in early May

While Aegean’s sale will make springtime trips to Greece cheaper for many travellers, two new British Airways routes will make it easier for people to get to two of the most popular islands in Greece — Mykonos and Santorini.

Starting May 3, BA will fly direct to Mykonos on Tuesdays and Saturdays from Terminal 5 at London’s  Heathrow Airport. The BA website says fares are as low as £85 one-way.

And beginning May 4, BA will fly direct to Santorini on Wednesdays and Sundays, also from Heathrow’s Terminal 5. According to BA’s new route announcement, fares will be as low as £175 one-way.

Those flights are bound to be a big hit with travellers who want to maximize their island time without having to stop over or catch a connecting flight in Athens.

New city discount card spotlights big savings at Athens shops, restaurants & cultural attractions

Big savings: Next time you fly into Athens International Airport, there’s something you should be sure to pick up before leaving the terminal (besides your luggage!).

The airport, in partnership with the Athens city guide magazine Athinorama, has launched Athens Spotlighted, a new city discount card program that offers significant savings at participating Athens shops, restaurants, nightclubs, galleries, museums and other cultural attractions.

The discount cards are free, and can be obtained from the Central Information Counter on the arrivals level of the airport terminal.

 

Savings on food, shopping & entertainment

So far, 22 restaurants are participating in the program, offering either 20% discounts on meals or special menus at special prices. Vassilenas in Piraeus, Kuzina in the Thissio district, Orizontes on Lycabettus Hill, Hytra in the Psirri district, and Aleria in the Metaxourgio area, are among the noteworthy restaurants involved in Athens Spotlighted. Seven different delis and food stores, including the Mastiha Shop in Central Athens, also provide cardholder discounts.

Four major entertainment venues — the Greek National Opera, the Greek National Theatre, the Onassis Cultural Centre and the Pallas Theatre — offer discounts of 15 to 20% on tickets purchased at the box office for each venue.

Nearly 20 major galleries and museums, including the Benaki Museum, the Museum of Cycladic Art, the National Gallery and the National Museum of Contemporary Art, also offer discounts on admission (from 10% to as much as 50%).

 

Deals for car rentals and city tours

More than 60 shops will provide discounts varying from 10 to 20%, depending upon the establishment, while over three dozen service providers — including car rental agencies, nail and hair salons and spas, and city tour companies — also offer cardholder savings, usually 20%. This includes Athens Walks, the independent local tour company that I personally recommend.

The Athens Spotlighted website contains full details about the program along with a list of participating businesses and attractions that you can download and print from your computer. (The listing includes information about any conditions or restrictions applicable to any product or service provided under the discount card program.)

I’ve made a note to pick up a card when I fly into Athens International Airport in a few weeks’ time. If I do get to use it (I’m not sure if I will be spending time in Athens yet), I’ll report back on my experience.

Olympic Air offers fast island hopping alternative for travel between Mykonos, Santorini & Crete

Air hops: Two new Olympic Air routes give travellers an appealing and much faster alternative to ferry travel if they’re island hopping between Mykonos, Santorini and Crete this summer.

The routes, between Mykonos and Santorini, and between Santorini and the city of Heraklion on Crete, will operate three days per week only until September 15.

The inter-island flights each take 35 minutes or less and are offered on Sunday, Wednesday and Friday. The new routes were introduced on June 30 to coincide with peak travel season in Greece. The flights are not offered at other times of the year.

The routes enable travellers to move between the islands in about half the time it would take on highspeed ferries, and in some cases offer considerably more convenient morning departure and arrival times.

Look way ahead: Two Greek airlines have enhanced their online booking systems with new calendars that make it easy for travellers see the lowest available airfares for the next 11 months.

In their regular weekly email updates this week, Aegean Airlines and Olympic Air both announced their new low fare calendars, which provide at-a-glance information on the cheapest airfares being offered over the course of the following 11 months.

SkyGreece to launch Athens flights in early 2014

SkyGreece Airlines posted this photo of a Boeing 767-300ER on its Facebook page this week. SkyGreece says it will receive the recently-purchased 274-seat aircraft in Athens sometime in early August.

 

Slow startup: North Americans will have to wait until 2014 to travel on a new airline that is planning to offer direct flights to Athens from Chicago, Toronto, Montreal and New York.

Early last fall, SkyGreece Airlines S.A. launched a website and Facebook page with announcements that it would commence direct service to Athens from the four North American cities in “Summer 2013.” The sparse, single-page website featured the SkyGreece logo with the catch phrase “A Greek spirit in the air,” and promised “Legendary Greek hospitality from take-off to landing!”

That news was followed by a flurry of Facebook posts, in November, December, and January, announcing various appointments to the upstart airline’s executive management team. And on February 15, SkyGreece posted a photo shot inside a hangar at the Hellenic Aerospace Industry facility at Tanagra, Greece, saying that’s where the airline’s “heavy maintenance program will be executed.”

But then there was no further news — until this week.
