Get outta Town! What follows is an account of restaurants located outside of Mykonos Town that I dined at, saw, or heard people talking about last month.

On the peripheral road around the town center

Gola, which was extremely popular the past several years, has closed. Word about town is that the Belvedere Hotel, which owns the property, will be opening an Asian restaurant in its place. Locals didn’t know if the new place will be as expensive as Gola (they’re hoping it will be more affordable) or when it will officially open.

Blue Ginger serves Thai and Chinese cuisine on a hilltop location with wonderful views of Mykonos Town and the sunset. Friends who dined there last year say the food is as good as the amazing views. (One of these friends used to live in Thailand, so if she recommends the food at Blue Ginger, then it has to be first-rate.)

  • Top 6 memories of my Mykonos holiday in 2012 — #4: Surf, sand & sun at more than 20 beaches

20 beaches: Locals tell me there are more than 60 beaches on Mykonos, some of which are situated in remote areas of the island that few tourists ever get to see. In all my visits to Mykonos to date, I have seen less than 30 beaches, which means there are still plenty more for me to discover on future holidays.

Last month, I got to see more than 20 different beaches, and actually spent awhile enjoying 17 of them.  I visited Kapari and Lia for the first time ever, and made return trips to several beaches I had not seen in a few years: Kalafatis, Elia, Super Paradise,  Psarou and Agios Stefanos.

  • Family-friendly Ornos beach on Mykonos

Family fun: Mykonos is notorious for its steamy beach party scenes, particularly at Paradise, Super Paradise, Elia and Paraga where the adult fun can get wet, wild and loud at the beachside bars and dance clubs. But if you’re travelling to Mykonos with children, and don’t want them exposed to scantily-clad college co-eds dancing on bars, chugging Jell-O shots, or sunbathing in the nude, where can you go?

Mykonos has more than 20 big beaches, and Ornos is one of the best for families. It’s a resort area boasting a good variety of hotels, bars and restaurants just a 10-minute drive from Mykonos Town.  Although there are some bars along the beach, Ornos doesn’t draw the “spring break”-type of party crowd that attracts hordes of college kids from around the world to Paradise and Super Paradise.

Below are some photos we took during a visit to Ornos one afternoon in May. We were shocked to find the area almost vacant despite the warm, sunny weather.
