No plunging at the Petasos: There are hundreds of beautiful hotel swimming pools in the Greek Islands but, as I’ve observed in earlier posts in my “Cool pools” series, their water is heated only by the sun and therefore almost always too cold for us to enjoy during our spring holidays.

That was especially the case when we stayed at the Petasos Beach Resort & Spa on Mykonos from May 9 – 16 2006. A 5-star hotel situated on a peninsula between Psarou bay and Platis Gialos bay, the Petasos Beach Resort boasts two attractive swimming pools — one overlooking each scenic bay. (The hotel also has several exclusive suites with luxurious private pools facing Psarou bay and the Aegean Sea, plus several more suites with “sharing pools” above Platis Gialos bay.)

Water in both pools was icy cold in early May

The main swimming pool is located next to the hotel restaurant, and has great views of Psarou beach and the mountains that enclose the bay on two sides. The long, rectangular pool has two levels; the water from the larger pool cascades over a marble-ledged “waterfall” about a meter above the smaller, lower pool. Both levels looked incredibly inviting until I dipped a foot in the icy-cold water and realized there was absolutely no way I could ever get the rest of my body wet. Virtually every other guest had the same reaction when they assessed the pool temperature.  A couple of people did try to take a dip after laying in the sun on poolside lounge chairs, but nobody managed to tolerate the cold water for more than a few seconds before rushing back to their towels and lounge chairs to warm up in the sun.

The water in a much smaller pool on the south side of the hotel, overlooking Platis Gialos beach and bay, wasn’t any warmer, and we didn’t see anyone even try to take a swim there.

Nevertheless, both pools had lovely terraces with great views, so it was still enjoyable to relax at poolside even if swimming was totally out of the question.

Below are several photos, from the Petasos Beach Resort website, showing the private infinity pools for some of the luxury suites. Those are followed by photos we took of the two pools accessible by all hotel guests.
